Sci-Fi Spine-Tinglers Screening This Autumn

Thu, 9 Oct 2014

The British Film Institute’s Sci-Fi: Days of Fear and Wonder season brings chills and thrills to Yorkshire and Cumbria for Halloween, with five special screenings in atmospheric locations.

On Friday 31st October at 7pm, Bradford Cathedral Artspace plays host to Robert Louis Stevenson’s monstrous morality tale Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde with a live organ accompaniment by Jonathan Eyre. John S. Robertson’s 1920s silent film stars John Barrymore as the mild-mannered doctor and his evil alter-ego. At the same time, sinister, blond-haired, glowing-eyed children will descend on the 18th-century Howsham Mill in an unforgettable screening of Village Of The Damned, the original 1960 adaptation of John Wyndham’s novel The Midwich Cuckoos.

A more recent cinematic triumph, Gravity brings nail-biting suspense and sublime special effects to Gunnerside Village Hall on Saturday 1st November at 7.30pm and later to Drigg and Carleton Parish Hall on Saturday 22nd November at 7.30pm. Alfonso Cuarón’s game-changing intergalactic thriller bagged a well-deserved seven Oscars at last year’s ceremony, with astronauts George Clooney and Sandra Bullock fighting for survival after a catastrophic accident in space.

If you manage to survive our Halloween spooktaculars, Guillermo del Toro’s haunting drama Pan’s Labyrinth adds fantasy into our Sci-Fi mix with a screening at Victoria Hall, Saltaire on Friday 21st November at 7.30pm. Set in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War, the phantasmagorical tale takes us on the strange journeys of an imaginative young girl who is possibly the mythical princess of an underground kingdom.

BFI Sci-Fi: Days of Fear and Wonder is a three month celebration of film and television’s original blockbuster genre. Over 1000 screenings of classic film and television programmes will take place at over 200 locations across the UK, from outdoor events at iconic British sites to screenings in multiplexes, local cinemas and community venues.
