Permanent Digital Cinema For Whitby as Scarborough Borough Council Announce Investment

Tue, 23 Aug 2011

Whitby will have a permanent, state of the art digital cinema as Scarborough Council announces its decision to invest in projection and screening equipment put in place at Whitby Pavilion by Cine Yorkshire, who selected the venue as its first host digital cinema residency in October 2010. Cine Yorkshire’s pilot residency at Whitby Pavilion enabled local audiences and visitors to access the latest film releases for the first time, whilst providing the venue with technical and programming expertise and allowing them to test the market before committing to a longer-term investment.

Whitby is one of Yorkshire’s most popular tourist destinations, known for its historic fishing port, narrow cobbled streets and a gothic fascination with literary legend Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Whitby Pavilion, situated on the stunning Cliffside overlooking the Bay, has welcomed 7300 visitors to 300 screenings at the cinema since it opened in October 2010. The programme has included family favourites, cinematic classics and special events, with highlights such as the Bram Stoker Film Festival, a 3D weekend, National Film Schools Week, the film strand of the Whitby 1940s Weekend and outreach screenings from Bradford International Film Festival and Bradford Animation Festival.

Emily Penn, Project Manager at Cine Yorkshire, says:

‘’Cine Yorkshire worked closely with Scarborough Borough Council and Whitby Pavilion to ensure that the film programme at Whitby was tailored to meet the needs of the local community. We’re delighted that the cinema has been so warmly welcomed by the residents of Whitby and look forward to continued success as our digital cinema initiative takes up residency at Hambleton Forum in Northallerton next month.’’

Jeremy Hartill, Executive Manager for Whitby Pavilion, says:

"This is great news for the people of Whitby and means residents will not have to travel great distances to enjoy a modern digital cinema experience. The pilot project proved that, with movies such as ‘The King's Speech’ packing out the theatre, cinema can be sustained and be successful in the town."
