Spring / Summer Programme Highlights

Thu, 2 Jun 2011

It’s been an exciting few months for Cine Yorkshire, working with our partners and venues to bring some truly unforgettable events to the county this spring. North Yorkshire Digital Cinema, a partnership of Screen Yorkshire, National Media Museum and Blaize, has now screened over 100 films to a total audience of nearly 9000 people since it launched in September 2010. Here’s a snapshot of some highlights.

On Saturday 14th May, Screenwaves presented the UK's first film screening run entirely from hydro power from an Archimedes Screw. Howsham Mill, a Georgian watermill dating from c.1755, sits on a tiny island in the River Derwent at Howsham, North Yorkshire. The programme on the evening included Submarine (from Sheffield’s Warp Films), Pulmo Marina and Summer. It was a magical evening for all who attended, including Mark Dolan, presenter of Sky Movies 35mm programme, who was there to record a feature for the show! You can watch online here.

The Galtres Centre, Easingwold has a fantastic programme of alternative content for discerning fans of theatre, ballet and music – normally a treat reserved exclusively for city dwellers. After kicking off it’s spring programme with Jamie Cullum live on Sunday 1st May and Coppelia Live from the Bolshoi on Sunday 29th May, the season closed with a sell out live broadcast of The Cherry Orchard, National Theatre Live on Thursday 30th June.

Blaize, who lead Cine Yorkshire’s village hall programme, rounded off a fantastic season with some extra special summer events. The Duchess screened at the stunning Beningborough Hall on Saturday 9th July, including a National Trust Historical Talk and Champagne Reception.

Blaize took Cine Yorkshire to the Grassington Festival from 19th - 25th June with a broad range of films to compliment the culturally diverse festival, which offers dance, music, art, poetry and....a dry stone walling workshop. The programme included: The Illusionist, A Day in the Life: 4 Portraits of Post War Britain, Of Gods and Men, Gypsy Caravan – when the road bends, The King’s Speech and a special screening of Gnomeo and Juliet featuring a Gnome painting workshop!

Cine Yorkshire a consortium helmed by Screen Yorkshire, the National Media Museum, and community arts company, Blaize, has been bringing the latest in digital cinema to venues, screening 100 films to a total audience of nearly 9000 people since it launched in September 2010.
