Duke of York Award for Selby Globe Community Cinema!

Wed, 1 Jun 2011

We are delighted to congratulate Selby Globe Community Cinema on winning a highly prestigious Duke of York Award for the development of community spirit, individual leadership and recognition of excellence! Selby Globe Community Cinema was born from a love of film and lack of cinema provision in the Selby area that spanned over 30 years. Run entirely by volunteers on a mission to extend the provision of film in Selby and surrounding villages, the group has welcomed over 3000 people through the doors since their first sell out event - a sing-along screening of Mamma Mia at the town hall in September 2009.

Group members will receive the award from the Duke himself in the autumn. The Globe's Eva Lambert said the project helped bring a sense of community to the town, which had been missing since the last cinema closed in the early 1980s. "The project has been designed to bring something to our town that not only serves the community but also helps to enrich and enhance our own lives. It's just fantastic news – we're completely over the moon.''

Selby Globe Community Cinema shows a range of classic, modern and sing-along films for all ages. A recent addition to the programme is the Silver Screen strand for over 50s, which takes place on the third Thursday of every month from 10am. The silver screen strand evolved in response to feedback from the local community. The audience actively get involved in choosing the films and it's a real social occasion, with the £3 ticket fee including a quiz and lunch.
